Marine Ambassadors to promote Cornwall’s Marine Industry to Cornish school children. Cornish Diving Centre is pleased to announce the appointment of owner and senior PADI Instructor Susan Disley as a Marine Ambassador. Funded through the Plymouth and South West Peninsula City Deal, the primary objective of the ‘Marine and Manufacturers Challenge Fund’ is to create mutually productive relationships between employers and schools that will enable young people to understand and plan for careers in marine and manufacturing industries and establish activities that make young people more employable by local businesses in these sectors. The skills gap is one of the biggest hurdles facing UK employers and it is no different in the South West. With over 700 marine businesses in Cornwall, we are able to facilitate the dissemination of necessary careers advice through co-ordinating skilled and experienced Marine Ambassadors to visit schools to showcase the exciting and rewarding opportunities and challenge some of the assumptions stopping young people from entering careers in these sectors. . The schools are extremely keen to promote marine careers to their students and first-hand experience of working within such careers from marine ambassadors is invaluable. Susan was chosen due to her work in Cornwall’s schools inspiring and informing young people about the marine world and opportunities available to them. Cornish Diving Centre has developed a presentation featuring pictures; all taken in Uk waters and takes the audience on a virtual dive on a popular local wreck. The photos for the slideshow are by local professional photographer Mark Webster, who has kindly given Cornish Diving Centre permission to use them. On taking up the appointment Susan said ‘this is a fantastic opportunity to show young people how abundant life is in Cornish waters and how scuba diving can lead to rewarding and exciting career choice.
